Oil based paint

Some of the disadvantages of oil based paints are

The time of drying the paint is very large.

Latex paint

Latex paint is more popular than oil based paint just because they offer a wide variety of options for different finishing surfaces. For example,

Flat- The paint will give a velvety finish to the furniture.
Gloss Finish- This kind of paint will give you long lasting finish along with gloss and reflectivity. This reflects light very well
High Gloss- This paint will give you a dramatic finish along with more durability. The reflectivity is higher as compared to semi-gloss finish.

The best features of latex paints are that they are inexpensive, available in wide variety of features and colors, cheaper than oil-based paint and easy to clean.

The disadvantages of latex paints is that they are only suitable for interior surfaces, need a lot of coatings, not too durable and the brushes may leave the mark on the painted surface. If you want the paint to last temporarily or have got contract to paint at a cheaper price, you can use the latex paints.

Water based paint

Water based paint have recently been popular in wood painting. Water based paint are more durable than latex based paint, though they are not as durable as oil based paint. It’s drying period is in the middle between latex paint and oil-based paint. It gives lesser odor than latex paint too.

Water based paint can be useful in both interior and exterior furniture painting.

Acrylic paint

Acrylic paint is a bit more expensive than water based paint, but it is more durable. But it has a higher drying time. Acrylic paint is a dual purpose paint which is useful for painting walls as well as furniture.

The best features about acrylic paint is that they are more durable than water based paint, washable with soap and water, smooth finish and rich color choices, quickly drying therefore more coats can be applied within a short period.

The disadvantage about acrylic paint is that you have to apply wood primer before applying this on furniture, might leave brush marks on the painted surface and more expensive than water paint.

Chalk paint

Chalk paint is one of the most durable paints. It is getting popular for furniture because of its good features like no primer is needed to be applied and beautiful matte finishing is obtained.

Some of the advantages of chalk paint are that

They can be used in both interior and exterior finish
They give beautiful matte finish
They don’t require any preparatory work on surface.

Some of the disadvantages of chalk paints are that

They are difficult to remove from surfaces.
They are not as durable as other paints.

Generally, cheap quality acrylic paints are used for wooden crafts. If you apply primer, the acrylic paint will stick more on wooden crafts. For glossy surfaces, you can sometimes use the high gloss latex paint.
